What Equipment Do Physiotherapists Use? A Guide to Physio Equipment

At Newcastle Physio Solutions, we use a range of equipment to support your assessment, treatment and recovery. From tools that help us assess how you move to equipment used during hands-on treatment and rehabilitation, everything has a purpose. In this guide, we’ll explain the different equipment we use, what it does and how it can help you get back to moving better and feeling stronger.

Massage Oil

I use massage therapy a lot on a daily basis as part of my treatment with patient’s and I find massage oil is the best to use for this. Some therapist’s use massage cream and talc but I have tried both of these in the past and feel massage oil work’s best. The oil I use at the clinic is grapeseed carrier massage oil, which is suitable for people with nut allergies and generally suitable for most people to use without causing a skin reaction.

Cupping kit

This is used with the aim of helping reduce muscle tension and promoting lymphatic drainage. This is suitable for most people apart from people suffering from bleeding disorders, cancer or those that are pregnant, where caution has to be observed.

Acupuncture needles

I use acupuncture widely during my day to day practice. I have a range of different sizes of acupuncture needles, which vary in length. Longer needles tend to be used in areas like the buttocks, which have a large amount of muscle and fatty tissue, as opposed to areas like the hand for example, where much smaller needles are used due to their being much less tissue in these areas.

Exercise bands

As part of patient’s home exercise program’s, these sometimes involve using exercise bands, which are light stretchy bands of different strengths according to colour. In the clinic, we have red/green and blue exercise bands, with red being the lightest (easiest) and blue being the strongest (Hardest) resistance. These exercise bands are very light and small in size so are easy to transport with you to work etc.

Taping

I always have a couple of rolls of kinesiology/sports tap in my room. This taping is used to help provide support around soft tissue like muscles/tendons, where a strain/sprain has occurred and the tape helps reduce stress on the area. It can also be used to help reduce swelling around a joint.

The equipment we use at Newcastle Physio Solutions is there to support your treatment — but it’s only one part of the process. The most important thing is understanding why you’re experiencing pain and what your body needs to recover properly.

We combine the right equipment with thorough assessment, hands-on treatment and personalised rehabilitation to help you move better and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

If pain or an injury is holding you back, don’t just put up with it. Book an initial assessment with our team today and let’s work out what’s causing the problem and how we can help.
